Santa Cruz fisher goes all in on seafood, whether it’s halibut, salmon – or slime eel

In the summer of 2011, Santa Cruz fisher Kevin Butler was leaving the boat harbor after a day of halibut fishing, about to head to his second job, running a restaurant kitchen. Butler concedes now that he was working too hard, keeping crazy hours, not taking care of himself. He landed on the dock and promptly had a massive heart attack at age 42. During recovery he asked himself: “What profession do I want to die in? Do I want to die in the kitchen or on the boat?”
